The Jantri calendar serves as an essential timekeeping system for the Punjabi community across the Indian subcontinent, exhibiting variations among different religious groups. Punjabi Sikhs and Hindus historically relied on the ancient Bikrami (Vikrami) calendar, which traces its origins back to 57 BCE with the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya. In contrast, Punjabi Muslims predominantly utilize the Arabic Hijri calendar.
Notably, certain festivals in Punjab, Pakistan, are determined by the Punjabi calendar. For instance, Muharram is commemorated not only according to the Muslim year but also observed on the 10th of Harh. The rural agrarian population in Punjab typically adheres to the Bikrami calendar.
While a solar calendar is generally favored in Punjab, the lunar calendar known as purnimanta is also employed. This lunar month commences with the concluding moment of the full moon, marking the start of the dark fortnight. Chaitra is regarded as the inaugural month of the lunar year, commencing on Chet Sudi—the first day following the new moon in Chait. Consequently, the first half of the purnimanta month of Chaitra is associated with the previous lunar year, while the latter half marks the advent of the new lunar year.
The regional New Year is celebrated on Vaisakhi and is computed according to the solar calendar. This occasion is recognized from sunrise to sunrise on the first day of the solar month, adhering to what is known as the Orissa rule; that is, day one of the month coincides with day of sankranti (termed sangrand in Punjabi).
